Ferdinand Zoettl reports:

As returning champions, we arrived at marshalling with a point to prove - both M1 and M2 had won their divisions last year. We rowed a strong clean race in which our time belied our performance due to strong currents, but determination and a well timed send on the reach propelled us to a second win on the trot as the fastest boat on the day. With W2 also winning their category, as well as Sam Taylor (3) racing again to win in the single, we headed down to the Haymaker pub all smiles in the sun to pick up a total of 19 hip flasks for the club. A great day out for the club!

Special thanks to St. Radegund boat club for organising a great day of racing!

Philippa Slay reports:

W2 had a fantastic race. Having had a few rocky outings recently and some very tiring days behind us, we went into the race slightly nervous and not truthfully expecting much, however, on the row down (accompanied by a luscious stream) we hit splits of 1:35 and 1:40 at our free rate bursts! This really sent the boat a message that the game was on and the division was ours to win. After some slightly tumultuous marshalling watching a boat try and plough through the hundreds of eights trying to bank up, it was finally our turn to set off toward the motorway bridge. As agreed, we tackled the first 100 as a fartlek, taking it up to rate 37, then dropping to 35, where our stroke seat made the decision that this was the rate she liked. Quite quickly a call from Qing to settle, made our very quick stroke come back down to a leisurely 32, where we stayed for the remainder of the race. Whilst the split did creep up ever so slightly around the corners, we were able to stay generally at a split of 2:01-2. Coming round to the plough everyone was getting tired, until we heard the booming sound of Grip telling Ella, Jen and Sophie to ‘start trying’. This led us all the way down the reach with splits hitting sub 2, 1:58 and below as we sprinted to the finish line. W2 finished in a time of 8 minutes and 7 seconds, putting us 16 seconds quicker than any other boat in our division and guaranteed us a win.
